What is Sea Buckthorn?

Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a legendary plant. References to medicinal use of Sea Buckthorn in skin and digestive treatments can be found in Ancient Greek texts attributed to Theophrastus and Dioskorid and in classic Tibetan medicinal texts, including "the RGyud Bzi" (The Four Books of Pharmacopoeia) dating to the times of the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD).  It has been said that Ghenghis Khan credited Sea Buckthorn with giving his armies incredible strength and endurance.

Sea Buckthorn, also referred to as seabuckthorn, sandthorn or seaberry, is well known in central Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and Asia but is virtually unheard of in North America. That is changing quickly.  There is growing interest internationally in both the plant and its fruit. The Sea Buckthorn plant has been used in soil conservation and reclamation, and the fruit is remarkably high in vitamins, antioxidants and omega fatty acids.  Sea buckthorn is considered a "superfood" for its numerous healing, restorative, protective, and nutritional qualities.  Please see Uses & Benefits for more detailed information.
